For
unsurpassed spyware protection, first-class customer support and ease
of use, nothing beats StopZilla StopZilla stands out in it's design and functionality as it was easy to download, install and operate. This program combines similar elements that you would find in a pop up blocker & firewall and allows you to easily |

select
what adware you want to leave on your machine and what you want deleted.
We have run numerous adware and spyware programs on our machines and none block everything as the variations are great but Stopzilla constantly appears to be attacking every new variant with updates. We were impressed with the frequently of updates that were received. StopZilla
runs in the background of your PC and will pop up when you are experiencing
an intrusion. If you block a popup that url will be added to your blacklist
and permanently blocked unless you change the setting yourself. This
black list is there for you to see what StopZilla
is blocking in the background. StopZilla
is an easy to install program, and very easy to use. |

Spy
Sweeper downloaded and installed easily and has a very simple user
interface. We found it to have one of the best combination of spyware
detection / prevention capabilities and ease of use. It found and removed
nearly 100 percent of the spyware and adware we tested it against and
its extensive spyware database is one of the largest in existence today. |

Another great thing about Spy Sweeper is the amount of real-time protection features called "shields" which they employ. These are essential in protecting your computer from spyware infection and unwanted changes to your system. The shields consist of a browser hijack shield, a startup shield (which we found in no other anti spyware product), IE favorites shield, Host file shield, realtime memory monitoring, amongst others. The folks at Spy
Sweeper are constantly updating their spyware definition database
to keep updated against the latest threats. These updates are frequently
and automatically downloaded to your computer as they are available. |

Trend
Micro Anti-Spyware is a comprehensive spyware detection and removal
solution, designed especially for home users. It was easy to download,
install and operate. The main reason why Trend Micro has made it into our top five is because it picks up the things in popular |
||||||||||
applications like in p2p for instance, as others don't. The history and tracks cleaner is a great bonus and it's shredder is good at getting rid of things that can't be moved, renamed, or deleted. Combine all this with a efficient interface and reasonable scan time and you have a good package. Trend Micro Anti-Spyware is a worthy successor to SpySubtract, but we expected it to fare better in testing. While it's unusually good at blocking spyware installation, it didn't manage to remove all of the spyware it detected. We look forward to improvement in coming versions as the product is more fully integrated with Trend Micro's other security offerings. |

Pest
Patrol was easy to download, install and operate. One sensible thing
that Pest Patrol
does during installation is force a check for updates as part of its
installation procedure; that way when you do your first scan, you're
theoretically protected from the most up to date spyware problems that
CA knows about. During our testing, Pest Patrol indicated that a system
reboot would be mandated once updates had finished, although |
||||||||||
curiously
it failed to actually do so on our test Windows XP Pro machine. One
manual reboot later, and we were ready to get to grips with Pest
Patrol. Pest Patrol scan interface offers only two basic options -- a Standard Scan, which checks typical spyware locations, and a Custom Scan, which performs a Standard Scan as well as checking user-selected drives. From here you can also schedule a scan on your chosen system. Pest Patrol includes a resident scanner, referred to as "Active Protection", which continually scans for malware in memory and potentially spyware-laden cookies. One irksome factor with Active Protection is that unless you choose the option to have it started when your computer boots, it won't by default run -- even when you launch the Pest Patrol application; you've got to go into advanced settings, pick Active Protection and then click the "Start Active Protection" button. Admittedly, it's a good way to force users to keep Active Protection running by making it run by default, but at the same time, is there some reason why this very useful function can't be switched on and off on the main splash screen? Ultimately Pest Patrol’s interface is quite obtuse and mundane, but if you can get pass it you will find a product that does quite a good job on checking systems for spyware threats, and an unsurpassed job of explaining each and every threat. |
